HISTORIC WATERMILL
D - 54587 Birgel/Vulkaneifel

Mill lovers make the pilgrimage to the Birgeler Mill
It has a lot to offer, the old Birgeler Mill, where wheat, rye, buckwheat, and spelt are ground to flour in four floors, where visitors can bake their own bread under the supervision of a baker, and where a rattling old sawmill saws through 10-meter long boards. In 1999 an old mustard mill was added. The mill was built in 1810, making it one of the oldest mustard mills in Europe.  Completely restored, the mill can produce up to 360 kg of mustard a day, which is sold to visitors.  Mustard producer Erwin Spohr has recipes for various kinds of mustard with different flavors. The tour of the mills is rounded off by a visit to the sawmill inn “Zum Sägewerk”, which offers a traditional mill menu, various theme days, and French cuisine. An old schnapps distillery was also renovated and is now operating. Small amounts of excellent fruit brandy are produced. With the addition of an oil mill, Erwin Spohr has created the largest functioning milling center in Europe. Please make an appointment for group tours.

x-tipThe restaurant is as inviting as during great-grandma’s time. Homemade sourdough bread, homemade soup, roasted meat, and great-grandma’s Döppekoochen (potato casserole) make everyone’s mouth water.  Invite your family, friends, acquaintances, relatives, or colleagues to an unforgettable meal at the Spohr family mill and go back to a time of hospitality with fun, games, and good food to your heart’s desire.
